An inquiry into the country's detention facilities has turned its focus to Villawood in Sydney's west.

It's recently seen a series of riots and protests - both inside and out - and the inquiry will investigate why they happened.

The parliamentary inquiry into Australia's immigration detention system is yet to hear an independent voice in support of mandatory detention, the Greens say.

Greens immigration spokeswoman, Sarah Hanson-Young, spoke to SBS's Peta Jane Madam.
