Political, business and community leaders have gathered in Melbourne to find ways to better use the skills of migrants, as it emerged that many cab drivers are qualified doctors and engineers.

African community leaders have warned of 90 per cent unemployment among migrants, because their qualifications are considered worthless in Australia.

I actually teach a large number of adult refugees and migrants and about half of them are qualified professionals in their home country. Nurses, teachers, engineers, etc. They are sent to me because they can't find employment due to English communication skill. In some cases though their English is better than a number of the arm chair philosophers complaining about migrants and refugees. Use the skills these people have and make the nation better for all.

Migrant standards

Well, I sure hope they are all better doctors and engineers than they are cab drivers! Most cabs I get in these days, you're lucky if they speak english and you've really scored if they actually know where you want to go to....

Australia has higher standards

I'd rather be treated by a doctor trained here than someone whose qualifications can't be trusted from Overseas whose standard could be lax, simple.

What a surprise....

How funny - as if they hadn't known since at least 30 years. Now it's a surprise? Skilled migrants coming to Australia are treated worse when it comes to jobs than refugees. I also would appreciate if this one-sided view is extend to ALL migrants, including those from Europe, US and Canada. Those not having English names are written off. It's not only "Africans", they might have more problems, but bottom line is, we all are treated as non-existent.

Better use of migrants' skills

Let's be honest for the sake of Aus.: White Anglo Australians are in many ways arrogant and ignorant about the diverse world and its human resources. The mix is a toxic one which is also called 'racism'. The 'R' word immediately puts White Aus. on defensive and offensive. Well, play it by the White rule if you like. But so long as ignorance is masked by arrogance, the nation keeps losing. Aus love charity from high pedestal of whiteness but will deny parity in workplace. It's 'R' in subtle form.

Why aren't these people given guidance

How is it that this is allowed to happen., when we for some time have been told of the shortage of Doctors in the bush?
