Many Libyans who had property seized when Colonel Muammar Gaddafi came to power are seeking a return of their assets under the new government

Libya’s transitional leadership says property issues will be resolved, giving compensation to those who had real estate seized under the Gaddafi regime.

The Gaddafi government confiscated homes and businesses from many well-off citizens in the 1970s; giving the buildings away, renting them out or selling them at low prices.

“The idea at the time was to take from the rich and give to the poor. But for a government like Libya, who has such enormous oil revenue, they did not have to do that really,” lawyer and activist Salah Marghani told CNN.

“The government has to step in and repair this damage through compensation or other means. Libya is a rich country and the government can take such burden.”

Marghani believes this is a priority for the government as the problem threatens social peace.

According to CNN there have been reports of Libyans reclaiming their property through force and violence.
