Tel Aviv has been named the top city worldwide for gay tourists, beating other top spots Berlin, San Francisco and Sydney.

American Airlines and Gaycities.com funded the poll, which saw Tel Aviv score 43 per cent of all votes, ahead of other top gay destinations such as San Francisco, Berlin and Sydney, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The city has in the past been the subject of a government-funded campaign to boost the 'rainbow dollar', when the tourism ministry joined Tel Avviv's municipality in promoting the Mediterranean hub.

Long a regional 'Mecca' for gay visitors, Tel Aviv is also known as a meeting place for homosexual Palestinians - many who come illegally.

After the announcement, the city's mayor reveled in the news.

"Ours is a city in which everyone can be proud of who they are," Mayor Ron Huldai told Reuters

Lonely Planet lists Tel Aviv as "the flipside of Jerusalem, a modern Sin City on the sea rather than an ancient Holy City on a hill"

"There are more bars than synagogues, God is a DJ and everyone's body is a temple", the guidbook announces.
