Burqini has been named the 2011 Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year, while Fracking was the people's choice.

'Burqini' has been named the 2011 Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year.

The Islamic swimwear was named Committee's Choice, while the People's Choice award went to 'fracking', as coal seam gas entered the public conscience.

Other favourites for the prize included 'pachinko', 'planking' and 'patchwork economy'.

2010's World of the Year was 'googleganger' ('noun: a person with the same name as oneself, whose online references are mixed with one's own among search results for one's name.')

Totally agree. Womans rights completely taken away for them. Why dont the men cover up as well so both males and females are covered up from head to toe? Only then will i agree with this as a religious choice.

I don't see what the controversy is about - it's sun smart and very stylish, and I think they look fabulous. If the burqini were never associated with burqa to begin with, I'm sure everyone would have assumed it was just another piece of specialist swimwear. If I were a Western woman (as opposed to being a bloke), I'd probably consider buying one simply for the Slip-Slop-Slap factor. The fact that conservative muslim women can wear them at the beach while looking stylish is surely a good thing.

well it seems to me, Issam, that in Australia an Islamic woman does have the right to choose to wear a burqini but here, unlike in her Islamic homeland, she may also choose to wear a bikini without fear of reprisal.

Brad, your a fool.Do you actually think that a women's right are taken away from her because she chooses to cover her body. If you had even take the effort to get off your slazy bum & research into the islamic dress code you would see that it only gives women their rights back! It gives women the right to express some modesty, which unfortunately is taken away from them by people like you who want them to take their clothes off. I guess saint Mary Mackillop must have reeeeally felt oppressed!

How cute! What a wonderful way of removing women's human rights.
