Solar projects have clinched science prizes for a NSW brother and sister.

A NSW brother and sister have been honoured as Australia's top young science minds.

The solar-themed projects by Ethan Butson, 16, and his sister Macinley, 11, took out the high school and primary sections of the annual national science awards run by the CSIRO.

The awards attracted more than 6000 entries, with the top 15 flown to Melbourne for a science workshop with some of the CSIRO's top science minds.

Ethan's entry, the UView Protector badge, sticks to a person to measure when and where they are exposed to UV radiation.

Macinley created the pyramid shaped Reflectacon 3000 which reflects more sunlight onto solar panels to increase electricity output.

The Wollongong pair were each awarded cash prizes with Ethan winning the chance to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles in May.
