Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett does not want a protracted campaign in the lead-up to the next state election.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says he will launch his Liberal Party's next election campaign "around Christmas time".

Talking to Fairfax 6PR radio in Perth on Wednesday morning, Mr Barnett said he did not want a protracted campaign in the lead-up to the next state election on March 9, 2013.

"We won't start the election campaign until around Christmas time," the state Liberal-National coalition leader said.

"I'm not going to have one year of election campaigning.

"We've got a state to run, some huge issues in Western Australia."
