Arruabarrena-Vecino wins Bogota tennis
Spain's Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino has won her first title beating Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-2 7-5 in the final of the WTA event at Bogota in Colombia.
Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain won her first WTA title by defeating Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-2 7-5 on Sunday in the final of the Copa BBVA Colsanitas.
Arruabarrena-Vecino becomes the latest in a long line of Spanish players to dominate the tournament on red clay.
The event was bound to produce an unexpected winner after all eight seeded players were knocked out in the first two rounds, some bothered by the altitude of 2600 metres in the Colombian capital.
"This is very special," Arruabarrena-Vecino said. "If you would have told me this on the first day, I would not have believed it. I'm really happy and proud of the title."
The 19-year-old Spaniard said she had jitters at the end.
"I was a little nervous closing it out but that is normal," she said.
