Aussie prisoners safe in Bali jail: DFAT

Indonesian authorities say Australian prisoners in Bali's Kerobokan jail are safe.

All of the Australian prisoners being held in Bali's riot-torn Kerobokan jail are safe, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says.

The 12 Australians include Schapelle Corby and a group of drug traffickers known as the Bali Nine.

"Indonesia authorities have advised that all Australian prisoners in Kerobokan Prison are safe," a DFAT spokeswoman said.

Heavily-armed police entered Bali's notorious Kerobokan jail on Wednesday to quell rioting prisoners and regain control of the facility.

Prison guards had abandoned the jail on Tuesday night during a riot linked to the stabbing of an inmate and the arrest of three others on Sunday.

The jail was built to hold only 323 prisoners, many serving long prison terms for drug offences.
