Labor Senator Gavin Marshall has denied any role in circulating a petition calling for a leadership spill.

Federal Labor senator Gavin Marshall has denied any role in circulating a petition calling for a leadership spill.

Media reports have suggested Senator Marshall is driving a bid to get a third of the Labor caucus to sign a petition that will would allow a leadership vote next week in Canberra when the caucus meets.

But Senator Marshall told AAP on Wednesday this was not the case.

"The ongoing reports that I am involved in circulating a petition calling for a spill of the ALP leadership are incorrect," the Victorian senator said.

"I have not been involved in the circulation of any such petition.

"Furthermore I am not aware of anyone else circulating such a petition."

Senator Marshall said he did not intend to fuel further speculation by making any other comments in relation to "internal party matters".
