Residents have reported roaring noises from the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City after signs of increased activity prompted authorities to raise alert levels.

"We can hear the roar of the volcano. Sometimes we can feel vibrations in our legs from its force," said Concepcion Perez, from the town of Xalitzintla in the central state of Puebla, 12 kilometres from the crater.

Authorities raised the alert level to "yellow phase three," extending a security radius around the towering, glacier-clad volcano 55 kilometres from the Mexican capital.

Officials in Puebla prepared temporary shelters in case of evacuations.

The National Disaster Prevention Centre said that activity within the volcano appeared to be diminishing, but they maintained the alert level.

Popocatepetl, Mexico's second highest peak, means "smoking mountain" in the indigenous Nahuatl language.

Pitiful coverage

It took me a long time to find any news about Mexico on this website, and when I do it's in South America. Shame on SBS that they don't even know their geography. Take a leaf out of Al Jazeera's book and start publishing the news on the student protests around Mexico regarding the presidential elections, the use of social networks that are affecting the elections and the simultaneous, international support of one candidate, even from four cities in Australia, on Sunday May 20th.
