The federal opposition has urged a Senate committee to publish a report by FWA into allegations Labor MP Craig Thomson misused funds while head of the HSU.

Lawyers for embattled Labor MP Craig Thomson have requested a report on his alleged misuse of funds while he was head of the Health Services Union not be publicly released.

Fair Work Australia found a raft of breaches of union rules and workplace laws during Mr Thomson's time with the union from 2002 to 2007 but has not named anyone and is still considering if it will launch any legal action.

Mr Thomson denies any allegations made against him.

The industrial umpire has agreed to hand the report to a Senate committee, now lawyers for Mr Thomson have requested that it not be made public.

They are arguing the release of the report could prejudice any legal action taken against him.

Liberal frontbencher Senator Eric Abetz has called it a "very weak" argument.

"We are absolutely surprised that Craig Thomson, at this late stage, has now engaged his lawyers to try to stop the committee from releasing the FWA report, when it finally comes to hand, after three plus years," he told ABC Radio on Thursday.

Senator Abetz urged the committee to reject the "very weak" argument, and move to publish the report.
