The navy has intercepted an asylum seeker boat carrying about 100 people northeast of Christmas Island.

The navy has intercepted an asylum seeker boat northeast of Christmas Island carrying almost 100 passengers.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said on Friday that HMAS Wollongong intercepted the suspected irregular entry vessel overnight.

The boat was initially detected by a RAAF maritime patrol aircraft.

It is believed there are 99 passengers and two crew onboard.

"Border Protection Command will now make arrangements for the passengers to be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established," Mr Clare said in a statement.

well these 99 fugitives from whatever can thank their lucky stars that Tony Abbot is not in charge. I have heard on good authority, albeit a source I cannot and will not reveal that the conservatives are plotting to not turn back boats but to sink them! Should all the conservative pollies now stand down and not be in parliament until they have been proven innocent?
