NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell says it's nonsense to have the State of Origin football match in Melbourne.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell is flying to Melbourne for the State of Origin match but says it's an insult Victoria is hosting the event.

"I can never see for instance, the AFL scheduling a Victoria, South Australia State of Origin match in Sydney," Mr O'Farrell told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

"This is State of Origin, Victoria is not part of the State of Origin series.

"It's a nonsense to have State of Origin in Melbourne, it's an insult to Origin fans in Brisbane and in Sydney.

"The match shouldn't be there, nevertheless I'm hoping it gives NSW their first win of the series."

He said Brisbane and Sydney had no trouble selling out matches.

Mr O'Farrell also had a go at The Age newspaper for printing Origin star Todd Carney as David Carney on their backpage on Wednesday.

"I've at least discovered that David Carney is a soccer player," he said.

"Good on The Age for trying to promote State of Origin but spell check and fact check is useful too."
