It was raining sheep on Melbourne motorists after a truck carrying 400 livestock rolled off a bend and hung precariously over a highway.

Police say the dramatic crash in Laverton North occurred when the sheep-carrying truck was travelling to Geelong on the Western Ring road off-ramp last night.

Two cars travelling on the Princes Highway overpass were hit by dead and injured sheep and one car rolled several times, but the occupants weren't injured.

The truck driver was also uninjured.

Police say the sheep carcasses will be cleaned up by council rangers later this morning.

Poor animals

This is heartbreaking. It doesn't seem like people think of this as a tragedy because they are just "sheep". I can imagine what kind of an outcry would have occurred if something like this happened to humans. We are so ignorant when it comes to animals suffering but I believe that one day it will come back to us. We are not immortal and will all die one day. Remember that and be kind to sentient creatures.

Badly done

If it's sentient, it suffers. Making light of a horrific accident like this makes it seem for all the world that your reporter puts conditions on compassion - a moral position that is used to admit, condone, even endorse, all that's worst of man's inhumanity. I don't turn to SBS for this kind of coverage. Badly done.

Forgotten road fatalaties

Road fatalaties are counted in human lives lost. Sadly this does little to reflect the true loss of life. Here were another (possibly) four hundred lives lost on our roads, with only a comment about 'raining sheep'. These sheep were sentient beings that undoubtedly felt fear and pain. My heart goes out to them.

Sheeps got kicked?

Dose Mario Gomez have something to do with those sheeps?

What a pathetic piece of reporting. What happened to the sheep? Did any survive? Did police come to destroy the injured. "Raining sheep" is making light of the situation. NOT FUNNY!
