An International Air Transport Association report shows fatalities from aviation-related incidents fell 38 per cent in the 12 months to April 2011.

The number of fatalities from aviation-related incidents fell 38 per cent in the 12 months to April 2011, according to International Air Transport Association's (IATA) latest safety report.

IATA figures showed there were 486 fatalities last year, compared with 786 the year before.

The number of aircraft built by western manufacturers lost per million sectors flown fell to 0.37 in 2011, from 0.61 the prior year.

IATA senior vice president of safety, operations and infrastructure Gunther Matschnigg said in the report aviation safety has improved.

"2011 was the second year in a row in which the accident rate was the lowest on record," he said.
