A book once owned by George Washington containing his annotated copy of the US Constitution has sold for nearly $10 million at a New York auction.

A book once owned by George Washington containing his annotated copy of the US Constitution has sold for nearly $10 million at a New York auction.

A spokesman for Christie's auction house says it's a new world record for a historical document.

Christie's says the bidder was a representative of the nonprofit educational organisation that operates the museum at Washington's Virginia home.

The 223-year-old book has President of the United States on the cover and also contains a copy of the Bill of Rights. Washington added brackets and notes that highlighted key passages about the responsibility of the president.

It sold for $US9.8 million ($A9.78 million) on Friday to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union. The book will be returned to the library at Mount Vernon.

The price doesn't compare to the value written in it.

Maybe Americans could have a good look at this book again. Doesn't the american Constitution say something about seperation of church & State, yet their govt has a motto "in god we trust" We Aussies can't talk. An absolute requirement for the position of a counsellor in an Aussie school is that they be Christian & know how to carry god's word to the little children along with counsel. We even call them chaplains. Our atheist PM promotes this for more VOTES. Could she HONOUR OUR constitution plz?!
