Qatar to bid for 2024 Olympics

The Arab emirate of Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 football World Cup, hope to bring the Olympics to the capital Doha two years later.

After failing in two previous bids, Qatar announced on Sunday it will be bidding to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to the capital Doha.

Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 football World Cup, will be hosting the 2014 world short-course swimming championships and 2015 men's handball world championships. They lost out in their bid for the 2017 world athletics championships.

Doha were eliminated by the International Olympic Committee as 2020 Olympics bidders in May as Qatar had planned on hosting the event in October to avoid the oppressive heat.

They also had bid for the 2016 Olympics - which were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.

"We have tried it twice, and we will continue. It's not something we will give up - it's part of our vision to make Qatar a centre for sport," said Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, general secretary of the Arab emirate's Olympic committee.
