How do Australia's CO2 emissions compare with other countries? Use our interactive graphic to visualise the raw data, then filter it by GDP, population and region.
The carbon tax is now a reality in Australia and the media is full of figures, but what does it all mean? SBS News has placed Australia's CO2 emissions in the global context with a data visualisation comparing its output with other countries'.
How do we rank given our thriving economy and small population? And how do we compare to countries with weaker economies but much higher populations?
Anti human??
Yes Cliff from Brisbane. Everyone breathes out CO2 and trees need it but it's not the harmless "natural" substance the fossil fuel industry makes it out to be. 3% concentration in air is the max safe limit for humans to breathe. 5% and you're unconscious. 10% and you're dead. And yes I agree that we have 6 billion too many people. Actually it's more like 6.5 billion. I suspect they will all be going away soon.... Oh and Kenny, if it takes a NWO to bring CC under control then bring it on...
One at a time
In response to Phil from Black town. Mate, any move in the right direction is a good move. Its not a perfect system, it may never be but it is a start for change. Regarding the "Scientific Debate" on global warming, there isn't one - all serious scientific bodies accept 100% our effect on the planets warming - If you think there is a debate you have been sucked in by GW Bush when he appointed Philip Cooney a Petro Industry lobbyist as White House head of Enviro policy - a nay say spin doc expert
real problem, poor solution
I am a supporter of the current scientific debate regarding global warming, and accept that humans are the primary contributor to it. But the argument falls down for a carbon tax in its current form in that the rest of the world are not enforcing a carbon price and nor are they likely to follow us at all, imagine if a government told Australians we are doing this because Britain id doing it, fair enough if the world really was going to the extreme we are, but the truth is they are not.
Interesting but not so simple
Wouldn't it be interesting to see which of these countries have nuclear power...or perhaps an indication of growth in CO2 production over the last 5 years...you'd start to see that Australia is not the evil CO2 empire that the Greens would like you to think we are
