The United States is experiencing its widest-spread drought in 56 years, according to a release by the nation's meteorological agency.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that some 55 percent of the contiguous United States, particularly in the Midwest, suffered from drought last month, according to the Palmer Drought Index, a formula that determines dryness based on temperature and rainfall data.

The percentage is the largest since 1956, when drought spanned 58% of the country.

This is the "14th warmest and tenth driest June on record," the report read.

"Topsoil has dried out and crops, pastures and rangeland have deteriorated at a rate rarely seen in the last 18 years."

Why crops should not be sown this year

Philosopher - from Yass, 9 months ago

The year 2012 is a Sabbath Year according to the ancient Temple Calendar and under Biblical law no crops should have been sown this year until well after the Feast of Tabernacles after 8 October 2012. Had the correct sequence been observed the lands would haver had their rest and the costs of poughing and sowing would have been saved in the North. Next Sabbath year is 2018. 2025 is th Treble harvest before the Sabbath of 2026 and the Jubilee year goes form Atonement to Atonement in 2027.
