A 4.5 magnitude earth quake has been recorded in Victoria's Gippsland south of Moe.

The US geological survey says the tremor happened at a depth of 10 kilometres.

There have been no reports of damage so far, but people say they felt the ground shaking.

The quake was also felt in Melbourne, where a says he house shook and windows rattled at about 7pm (AEDT).

The tremor sparked a social media flurry, with dozens of Melbourne residents reporting similar incidents.
