Rebel fighters in the Syrian city of Zabadani say shelling attacks are becoming more frequent, as government foot soldiers retreat to defend Damascus.

Zabadani, which lies in the west of Syria near the Lebanese border, is ringed with tanks. Anti-government forces accuse the government of increasing shelling in the city, taking revenge for the rebel assault of Damascus.

Islamic pro-democracy fighters have told BBC correspondent Paul Wood they believe they’re closer than ever to getting rid of President Bashar Al-Assad.

“Before Damascus, the regime could crack down where they wanted,” one fighter claims. “Now, they’re weak. Their soldiers are mercenaries. They fight only from a distance. Of course, we have few resources, so the regime is holding on.”
