Australia's system of mandatory detention is under increased pressure, with the number of asylum seekers arriving by boat breaking the previous record.

Nearly 7,000 asylum seekers have been intercepted over the past seven months, surpassing the record set two years ago.

In 2010, 6,535 asylum seekers arrived by boat, while 6,764 asylum seekers have been intercepted so far this year.

Labor says it's hypocritical for the Coalition to complain about boat arrivals, but will not support legislation that would re-introduce offshore processing.

The Opposition argues that only stubborn pride is preventing Labor from resuming processing on Nauru.

Let's stop focusing on 'the boats' and look to the issue here

You say Australian's first, but you fail to recognise that you yourself are not one of the first Australians. You want to take that argument, then look to Australia's history and treatment of Indigenous Australians. Secondly, Australia is not the 'butt of jokes around the world' with regards to this issue-it's ignorant and racist people like you that are aughed at as reflecting a xenophobic Australia. If you and your family were at risk of persecution, you would become an asylum seeker yourself!

It realy is beyond a joke now, the Government has failed Australians badly and fail's to stop the boats! Australia is the butt of jokes around the world and as an Australian I'm ashamed by Gillards inability to stop the boats and protect our shores. The sooner we get rid of the idiocy of Gillards /Greens shambolic Government the better. Austraalians First !
