A man has been stabbed in an unprovoked road rage incident in Liverppol in Sydney's south west.

A man has been stabbed in an apparent road rage attack in Sydney's southwest.

The 20-year-old was with a 21-year-old man at the intersection of Macquarie Street and Memorial Ave, in Liverpool, at about 6.10pm (AEST) on Sunday when a man from another car approached their vehicle.

The two men got out of the car and the 20-year-old was assaulted with what police believe was a knife or a screwdriver.

He got back to his car with the help of his friend and they drove off before the man later realised he had been stabbed twice in the abdomen.

He remains in a stable condition in Liverpool Hospital.

It appeared to be an unprovoked attack, police said in a statement.

The attacker was aged 23 to 24 years old and was wearing a light blue hooded jacket and blue jeans.
