Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says there are issues with social media that need examination, something a coalition taskforce is doing now.

A federal coalition taskforce is examining tougher regulatory powers to take down offensive social media material.

Its work coincides with a row over a Facebook page which portrayed Aboriginal people as drunks who sniff petrol and bludge on welfare.

The creator removed content from the Aboriginal Memes Facebook page on Wednesday following a barrage of complaints to Facebook, the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has said Facebook itself should have acted to shut down the site.

"One of the things it's looking at is stronger take-down powers for the regulators," he told ABC Radio on Thursday.

Free Speech?

Funny that for a free country where we have freedom of speech we have so many arguments in government about what we should say and not say. Post or not post. If you cannot see humour in anthers jokes don't listen to them. If you do not agree with another point of view. Respect that is their opinion and not yours.

Freedom of Speach

We must tread very carefully with Governments interfering with social media and free speach. We are fast becoming a country where the Government is interfering and trying to control our daily lives. Social Media, is no different than a gun, car, etc they cause no harm on their own, but in the wrong hands there very dangerous. We should concentrate.on the abuser not Social Media as a whole.
