Anonymous targets ASIO, DSD websites

Activist hacking group Anonymous has targeted the websites of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and Defence Signals Directorate.

Activist group Anonymous says it has successfully knocked offline the public website of Australia's domestic spy agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).

The group says it also intends to target another of Australia's intelligence bodies, the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD).

ASIO said in a statement on Friday the agency was "aware that there may have been some technical issues with its public website".

But the agency insisted the public website did not host any classified information.

"Any disruption would not represent a risk to ASIO's business," the agency said.

The website did not appear to have any problems when checked by AAP on Friday.

Anonymous Australia said on Twitter that hackers had been "busy" attacking the site.

Another Twitter post said: "ASIO Down. Once Again! DSD! You're NEXT!"

A Defence spokeswoman said the Cyber Security Operations Centre at the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) was "aware of recent hacktivist group activity directed at the DSD website".

"The DSD website has not experienced any technical issues and has remained available," the spokeswoman said.

"The DSD website does not host any classified information and any disruption would not represent a risk to DSD business."

DSD said the website had "robust measures" in place.

The privacy commissioner earlier this week launched an investigation into companies AAPT and Melbourne IT after their customer data was compromised in a hacking attack.

Two AAPT clients, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Crime Commission, also are investigating whether the leak compromised their operations.

Anonymous claimed responsibility for the data leak and said it publicly released the information to protest against proposed new national security laws.
