Former New Zealand coach Ruth Aitken will make a surprise return to coaching at the Mystics ahead of the 2013 trans-Tasman netball season.

Current coach Debbie Fuller decided to step down from the head role to spend more time with her young family with Aitken accepting a one-year contract at the Auckland franchise.

Fuller will remain as a defence coach with the Mystics, who were the first team to use the "chairlift" defence in the goal circle this season.

She led the team to two successive finals campaigns.

Aitken retired from the Silver Ferns following last year's world championships after a 10-year stint as national coach.

It will be her first foray into the ANZ Championship, joining long-time coaching rival Norma Plummer (West Coast Fever) in taking up the challenge.
