Souths crush Eels, Inglis vows even more
South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis has spearheaded a 38-6 NRL win over Parramatta. (AAP)
South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis believes he can play even better after starring in the Rabbitohs' 38-6 NRL thumping of Parramatta on Sunday.
Despite two tries, three try assists and terrorising the opposition every time he touched the ball, South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis is adamant he and the Rabbitohs have only scratched the surface.
Inglis turned on a clinic as Souths consigned Parramatta to their first wooden spoon in 40 years with a 38-6 win at ANZ Stadium on Sunday - the one-man wrecking crew backing up his dominant display with an ominous warning ahead of the NRL finals.
"I know I've got a lot more improvement in me personally, there's still a lot more to my game than what was out there today," Inglis said.
"I believe we can take it to another gear next week. That's the most important thing, (against Newcastle) next week."
Inglis' declaration is a scary thought for the Rabbitohs' finals rivals, as the storied club edged closer to an all-important top-four finish and just their second finals campaign in the past 21 seasons.
They still need to beat the Knights to guarantee a top-four finish, with a loss opening the door for North Queensland to overtake them.
As good as his teammates were - Adam Reynolds producing another precise kicking game which included the assist for Matt King's opening four-pointer and Nathan Merritt finding form with a try double - Inglis looms as the make or break man for the Bunnies.
He had it all against the Eels, brute force ensuring his opening try before a bullet cut-out pass for Merritt's first just after halftime when the game had been in the balance at 14-6 after a Luke Burt four-pointer before the break.
Then after providing a one-handed pop-pass for Dylan Farrell to score, Inglis strolled over for his second before finishing off a freakish display with another basketball effort to set up winger Andrew Everingham.
Despite the show, Inglis claimed he was still learning his craft at fullback.
"I think it just goes back to the new position - that's the challenge that I see that I can hopefully master by next week," Inglis said.
"I keep saying throughout the year, I keep looking at other fullbacks, the Ben Barbas, the Billy Slaters - I keep looking at how they persevere with each and every week and that's where I want to lift my game to."
Coach Michael Maguire seemed happy enough with where his fullback's game was at.
"He's pretty handy down there, he was outstanding," Maguire said.
"Greg brings that to the team.
"He probably blew the cobwebs away a little bit last week but Greg was disappointed of our performance (last week) and he came out and showed that with the way he played today, along with all the team."
Retiring Eels skipper Nathan Hindmarsh was similarly impressed.
"He's probably been the hardest bloke there is to tackle over (my career)," Hindmarsh said.
"It's hard to find someone else that's as (dangerous), you do a kick-chase and you go 'geez here comes GI', and I've never felt like that before so he's definitely a handful."
