A right knee problem is the latest setback for Australian cycling star Cadel Evans which has forced him to pull out of a race in Colorado.

Cadel Evans' woes have continued, with a knee injury forcing the 2011 Tour de France winner out of the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado.

As fellow Australian cyclist Rory Sutherland won stage six, Evans pulled out midway through.

"I've had the pain since the first or second day," Evans said of his right knee.

"Today, being hilly and so, I couldn't be of any use to the team, especially the responsibility the team had today.

"I didn't want to injure myself further without contributing anything to the team."

It was a bad day for Evans' BMC team, with teammate Tejay van Garderen finishing 11th on the stage and dropping from first to third overall.

Evans has had a frustrating season, finishing seventh in his Tour title defence in July.

He fell ill during the Tour and that affected him into the London Olympics.

Evans completed the Games road race, but pulled out of the individual time trial.

He hopes to compete at next month's world road titles in the Netherlands.
