Curious humpback whales have been getting up close and personal with tourists off Hervey Bay in Queensland.

Humpback whales have been spending hours circling tourist boats on Queensland's Fraser Coast in friendly encounters known as "muggings".

Tourism operators at Hervey Bay, a whale watching hotspot, have reported humpback whales spending hours circling boats and frolicking in front of thrilled audiences.

Pacific Whale Foundation researcher Greg Kaufman says the whales' behaviour is believed to be unique to Hervey Bay.

"The curious humpbacks of Hervey Bay provide some of the most unusual and prolonged encounters with humans," he says.

"These 'muggings' are very unusual and have made whale watching in Hervey Bay legendary."
