Two suspected terrorists have been killed in a shootout with police in Indonesia, just six weeks out from the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombings.

A member of Densus 88 - Indonesia's crack anti-terror unit - was also killed when police ambushed a group of armed men outside a supermarket in the city of Solo, in central Java, on Friday night.

Police confirmed a security operation had taken place but would not say which organisation the two suspected terrorists belonged to, or whether they were planning attacks.

"They were armed and one of the police officers was also shot dead," Indonesian National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said on Saturday.

One other terrorist suspect was arrested at the scene.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the terror suspects had resisted arrest, AFP reported.

"We are almost certain they were connected with a terror network, and although there weren't many in this ambush, we can be sure they were not working alone," Dr Yudhoyono was reported as saying.

The incident comes after a policeman was killed by unidentified gunmen in Solo on Thursday night.

Indonesia has been the target of numerous terrorist attacks over the past decade, including the 2002 bombing of two nightclubs in Bali which killed 202 people.

Eighty-eight Australians were killed in the Bali bombings.

A large number of people, including survivors as well as world leaders, are expected in Bali on October 12 for ceremonies to commemorate the 10th anniversary of what remains Indonesia's deadliest terror attack.

The Australian government earlier this year lowered its threat warning for Indonesia.

However, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) website still advises that the threat from terrorism remains high.

"We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali, at this time due to the high threat of terrorist attack," DFAT has advised.
