The Prime Minister has admitted the education system is failing our students, particularly those in remote and rural areas.

In her response to the Gonski review of schools funding, she's promised to lift funding to $6.5 billion dollars, with more going to our kids across the country.

“There are about 18,800 Indigenous school children in very remote Australia,” the Prime Minister said in a press conference given today.

“Today, in very remote Australia the average Indigenous child is still reading below Year 3 level in Year 9.”

Under the new national plan, schools will receive a benchmark amount of funding for each student. The plan will take six years to implement.

But schools with a high number of Indigenous students say the first step is making sure all students reach the national average.
