The Afghan government says an Australian military operation has provoked further unrest in Oruzgan province.

A serious rift is continuing between the Afghan and Australian governments over a military operation on the weekend.

Australia says the operation, aimed at catching the rogue Afghan army sergeant who killed three Australians last week, resulted in the deaths of what it's calling two insurgents.

It says some people were briefly detained in what it's describing as a joint operation by Australian and Afghan forces.

But the office of Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai says the operation was carried out by the Australians alone, in violation of a bilateral agreement.

Spokesman Aimal Faizi says the operation has resulted in further unrest in the region.

He told Zara Zaher it came to the notice of the President when about one-thousand angry people gathered outside the local governor's office.

Kaizai's comments on this matter (and others) show why Afghanistan is what it is.. you cant trust them because they habitually bite the hand that helps them.

Where were the protesters?
