Boy clung to police who found dead mum

Emergency services did not see anything unusual when they visited a Melbourne home the day before a 15-month-old boy was found with his mother's body.

A 15-month-old boy who spent up to 31 hours alone with his dead mother clung to the police officers who found him.

Emergency services went to the Yarraville unit in Melbourne's west on Monday afternoon after a report of a woman lying on the floor, but they did not go inside.

It wasn't until 9pm (AEST) on Tuesday that police found the 25-year-old woman's body.

The severely dehydrated boy was found alongside his mother's body on the floor of the living room.

Sergeant Mark Anderson said the 15-month-old clung to anyone who picked him up.

"He was very quiet initially, but as soon as we got in and picked him up I suppose he was very clingy," Sgt Anderson told reporters.

"He didn't want to let go of anyone that was holding him."

The boy needed food and water and a nappy change, he said.

Paramedics were at the home about 2pm on Monday, after a passerby called triple-zero saying there was a woman lying on the floor.

The curtains were drawn and they could not see inside the unit, acting Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) group manager Greg Gibson said.

"They spent considerable time knocking on the door and windows to establish whether there was a patient. However there was no response," Mr Gibson said in a statement.

"Our control room called back the original caller, who was unable to provide any further information.

"Given the conflicting description of the scene and the lack of evidence suggesting that anyone was inside, the crew then cleared the scene."

Neighbours said the woman doted on her little boy.

The boy was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital suffering from dehydration but was released on Wednesday, with a hospital spokesman saying he was in a satisfactory condition.

Police say the woman's death is being treated as non-suspicious.
