Chinese students take to social media platform Weibo to wonder how one nursing student is dead while another is in a critical condition after yesterday's Bankstown house fire.

Chinese student Yinuo Jiang remains in critical but stable condition in Liverpool Hospital as Chinese students take to social media to show their support and question her apartment building’s fire protection.

The 27-year old from Harbin in North-eastern China yesterday jumped from the fifth floor of her Bankstown apartment building after an explosion on the balcony, which led to a blaze that killed her flatmate Connie.

Yinuo is believed to be studying for a Masters degree in translation and interpreting.*

Superintendent Chris Jurgeit of Fire and Rescue NSW said Yinuo had a life or death decision before she leapt from the building's fifth floor to the first floor.

“The fire has gone into the unit and its hit the other end of the unit in the vicinity of the other exit door and managed to trap the two occupants of the apartment into a bedroom, but the heat has been that strong that the walls have cracked,” he said.

Chinese social media site Weibo’s “Sydney Today” page gathered hundreds of comments overnight.

One poster claimed they had lived at the property and said there had been issues with the fire alarm in the past.

“I lived there two years ago and there was always a problem with the alarm. It was always ringing and now there has been a fire,” it reads.

One friend calling themselves “Cherry” posted “My heart goes out to you. Leave everything to us. All you need to do is get better everyday.”

Yinuo’s last post to her Facebook page on September 2 mentioned she had been suffering from a heavy flu.

“Appreciate my lord blessing me and survived me one more time ..... appreciate it from my heart,”

The deceased 19-year-old was believed to be a nursing student called Connie.

She was living with her parents who came out from China to support her though her studies.

*It was earlier incorrectly reported that Yinuo Jiang was a nursing student.
