Yemeni soldiers have killed four insurgents with suspected links to al-Qaeda in the south of the country.

Yemeni soldiers have killed four insurgents with suspected links to al-Qaeda in the south of the country.

Saturday's incident occurred in the Ja'ar district of Abyan province, military sources said.

Abyan governor Gamal al-Aqel was meanwhile quoted on the Defence Ministry website as saying 28 al-Qaeda operatives were arrested in the province.

"Few terrorists are still hiding in the remote mountainous areas and are being tracked down," he said.

A major military campaign backed by the US was launched against radicals with ties to the al-Qaeda network in April.

Areas in Yemen's south, where the militants are believed to have strengthened their hold amid political turmoil, have been targeted.
