A Central Coast woman who found $18,000 worth of gold on beach and handed them into local police has been rewarded for her honesty.

Honesty has proved to be the best policy for a NSW Central Coast woman, who will get to keep $18,000 worth of gold bars she found on a beach.

The 24-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, was allowed to keep the beached treasure on Friday, four months after she found the bars on Forresters Beach in early April and handed them to police.

Wyong Exhibit Sergeant Jason Sharp said the woman was thrilled she was able to keep the gold after initially believing its original owner would claim the small fortune.

"She was an extremely happy customer," said Sgt Sharp.

"She was genuinely pleased that honesty ... paid off."

The identity of the original owner remains a mystery.

Wyong police said despite four months of inquiries, which included checking the serial number with the Royal Australian Mint, police were unable to locate the rightful owner.

"We honestly believed we were going to return it to its owner because of the nature and uniqueness of the find," said Sgt Sharp.

"Even the finder said she thought that after she handed it in, the owner would be found.

"This is one of those good news stories where someone who was genuine and honest, for all the right reasons, was rewarded."

Sgt Sharp said the bars were found at the back of the beach.

"They were stacked together and quite grubby," he said.
