British researchers have re-created new cells in gerbils, which reversed profound hearing loss in some cases.

In a lab, the researchers grew stem cells that came from donated cells, and grew them into healthy replacements.

When the cells were injected into 18 deaf gerbils, tests showed on average, 45 per cent of their hearing was restored.

Trials on humans could be just a few years away.
