Four women charged with genital mutilation

Police have laid more charges over the genital mutilation of two young girls in NSW, bringing the total number of arrested to eight.

Four women, including a 77-year-old, have been charged with the genital mutilation of two young girls in NSW.

The arrests of the women - aged 39, 68, 73 and 77 - in Sydney and Wollongong on Wednesday, bring to eight the number of people now charged in the case.

They are alleged to have been present at one or both of the female circumcisions of two girls, aged six and seven.

Each woman has been charged with prohibition of female genital mutilation.

All four have been granted bail to face Parramatta Local Court on November 7.

The eight arrests follow an investigation by Strike Force Longfield and the NSW Departments of Health and Family and Community Services into the alleged procedures.

Two men and two women remain before the courts after being charged earlier this month.

Investigations are continuing.
