The African Boys Leadership Academy is made up of 23 boys aged 12-16.

Many are refugees who have fled persecution in order to settle in Australia.

Their first match was played against an Indigenous team from St John's Catholic College in Darwin.

The new African AFL enthusiasts managed to score 2 goals in that game, though they were over-powered by a much stronger St John's team.

There have been tensions between the African and Indigenous communities in Darwin, but AFL officials say sport is a good way of resolving such racial tensions.

The African Boys Leadership Academy will continue its season playing against schools in the Darwin area.
