Three asylum seekers on Nauru have spent a night in the local police station after a 'minor disturbance' at the processing centre on the Pacific island.

Three asylum seekers on Nauru have spent a night in the local police station following damage to processing facilities on the Pacific island.

A spokesman for the Department of Immigration said there was a "minor disturbance" at the temporary regional processing centre at Topside, Nauru, on Sunday night.

There were some minor damage to kitchens, tents and lights, but no staff nor asylum seekers were injured, the spokesman said.

Nauru police had also attended the unrest, the spokesman said.

"As a result of that, three clients were held overnight by the Nauru police," the spokesman told AAP on Monday.

The three men returned to the Nauru processing tent camp on Monday.

Any charges would be a matter for the Nauru government, the spokesman said.

Nauru has the capacity to hold 1500 asylum seekers once the facility is built.

Asylum seekers are at risk of being transferred to Nauru or Papua New Guinea's Manus Island under the government's new offshore processing regime for those who arrive in Australian waters by boat.
