RBA boss in running for top British job

Reserve Bank of Australia boss Glenn Stevens is in the running to become the new governor of the Bank of England, according to the British press.

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Glenn Stevens has emerged as a dark horse for the top job at the Bank of England.

The Times newspaper in London reported that Mr Stevens was asked by Treasury to apply to replace Sir Mervyn King.

Stevens is well regarded among central bankers, with the recent health of Australia's economy compared to its western peers working in his favour.

Under new regulatory framework, the Bank of England governor will be the most powerful civil servant in Britain with a salary of STG302,000 ($A480,500) a year.

The job will involve responsibility for monetary policy, monitoring banks and preventing any future financial or economic crises.

Job applications reportedly have to be filed with the Treasury by 8.30am (1730 AEDT) on Monday.

Mr Stevens is due to front a house parliamentary economics committee in Canberra on Monday over alleged corruption in Note Printing Australia (NPA) and Securency.

Bank of England deputy governor Paul Tucker is considered the favourite to replace Sir Mervyn.

Other leading contenders include John Vickers, the economist who led the UK government's review into breaking up banks, and Santander UK chairman Terence Burns.
