Toyota is recalling almost 300,000 cars sold in Australia to fix a potential problem with the power window master switch.

The recall involves certain Corolla, Kluger, Rav4, Yaris, Aurion and Camry vehicles built between 2006 and 2010.

The company is recalling 7.4 million vehicles worldwide. Toyota said the master switch, located on the driver's armrest, may not operate smoothly due to the incorrect application of lubricating grease.

The problem could result in wear to the internal sliding contact points and, in some instances, the switch may stop working. In the worst cases, if attempts have been made to fix the problem with a commercially available lubricant, the switch may overheat and melt.

The recall will involve checking the switch and applying a special electrical grease.

A small number of vehicles may need a new power window circuit board. Toyota said there had been six reports of problems with the switch in Australia but no accidents or injuries as a result.
