A 27-year-old man has died after he and a companion were shot seven or eight times as they sat in a car in western Sydney.

A 27-year-old man has been shot dead in what police believe was a targeted attack in western Sydney.

A 32-year-old man who was with him was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting in Greenacre.

The pair were shot seven or eight times as they sat in a car on Greenacre Road about 1.20pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

The man sitting in the passenger seat was treated at the side of the road by paramedics before being pronounced dead, having been shot multiple times in the chest and shoulder.

The older man, sitting at the wheel of the car, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. He was stable on Sunday evening and undergoing treatment.

Police are not saying which hospital he is at, because of safety concerns.

"There's no doubt in my mind that this is a targeted shooting," Superintendent David Eardley told reporters outside Bankstown police station on Sunday evening.

"This is not a random incident. It's concerning."

He said it was "of great concern" that there were people who were prepared to use firearms in residential areas.

One local resident said the men were in a grey Holden Commodore and were shot at by a gunman travelling in another car.

"The passenger died straight away, I think they (the bullets) were meant for the passenger," said 44-year-old George Mourade.

"He was trying to open the door and run away but he died face down.

"The driver was battling to survive ... I don't know if he'll make it."

Mr Mourade, who described Greenacre as a "beautiful area", said he was among the first on the scene after hearing seven or eight bullets being fired.

He said he didn't see the gunman, but added, "Somebody drove away, they'd shot at them."

He wasn't sure who the victims were but suggested they might have lived locally.

Forensics officers were still at the scene, near Greenacre Park Reserve, gathering evidence on Sunday evening.

There have been dozens of shootings in western Sydney since January, with many said to involve gangs fighting over drugs and territory.
