Origin Energy says production has resumed at its joint venture Yolla gas project in the Bass Strait.

Production has resumed at the Yolla gas project in the Bass Strait but part of its upgrade has been delayed, its operator Origin Energy says.

The Yolla gas field has been upgraded from an unmanned offshore platform to a manned platform, and delays had caused a longer than expected halt to production.

It had now returned to free-flow production mode after installation of an accomodation module, Origin said in a statement on Monday.

The upgrade was also due to include installation of a compression module to help with gas flows, but that wasn't successful. Another attempt will be made over summer at a date yet to be fexed.

The company said a project co-owner had welcomed the decision to delay further work.

Yolla is part of the BassGas Project, a joint venture between Origin, AWE and Toyota Tsusho Gas E&P Trefoil.

AWE said the upgrade deferral would allow production to continue for the remainder of the 2012/13 financial year.

"This should lead to reduced development capex and some improvements in production and revenue, and we will update guidance for these items for the 2012/13 financial year in our upcoming quarterly report," AWE managing director Bruce Clement said in a statement.
