The man charged with the rape and murder of Jill Meagher is believed to have been rushed from his jail cell to hospital with self-inflicted wounds.

The man charged with the rape and murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher is believed to be in hospital with self-inflicted injuries.

A Corrections Victoria spokesman said a man was taken from a maximum security jail to St Vincent's Hospital in the early hours of Sunday suffering with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries.

The spokesman would not identify the man but media reports said it was Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, who was charged with the rape and murder of the ABC employee as she walked home from a bar in the suburb of Brunswick on September 22.

The 29-year-old's body was later found in a shallow grave northwest of Melbourne.
