The federal government and opposition are running neck and neck on a two-party preferred basis, according to the latest Newspoll.

The Gillard government and the coalition are now neck and neck with voters on a two-party preferred basis, according to the latest Newspoll.

And despite the bitter "gender war" debate with Prime Minister Julia Gillard slamming Opposition Leader Tony Abbott as a misogynist, there has not been much change in personal support for both leaders in the poll published by The Australian on Monday.

In the poll, taken over the weekend, Labor's primary vote has lifted three points to 36 per cent over the past three weeks, while the coalition's support has dropped four points to 41 per cent.

The Greens are unchanged at 10 per cent.

The Australian says that based on preference flows at the last election, Labor and the coalition are locked at 50-50.

Voter satisfaction with Ms Gillard has eased one point to 35 per cent while dissatisfaction firmed one point to 51 per cent,

In comparison, those who were satisfied with Mr Abbott's performance dropped three points to 30 per cent with dissatisfaction rising three points to 58 per cent.

Ms Gillard remains ahead as the preferred prime minister, with her support gaining two points to 45 per cent and Mr Abbott's firming one point to 34 per cent.

The Australian says with Ms Gillard's personal ratings barely shifting and the rise in Labor's support, speculation about Kevin Rudd making a leadership comeback will be dampened.
