An AFL footballer has appeared in a Melbourne court charged with breaching an intervention order.

An AFL footballer has appeared in court accused of breaching an intervention order.

Police allege the player sent 98 text messages and 16 Facebook messages to a woman who had an intervention order out against him.

The player was charged in September with two counts of breaching an intervention order and bailed on his own undertaking, the Moorabbin Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday.

He continued to contact the woman after he was bailed.

The player was arrested on Monday night and remanded in custody, the court heard.

Magistrate Rosemary Carlin granted bail on conditions including that he abide by the conditions of the intervention order and not contact prosecution witnesses.

She said she believed the night in custody would have been a sobering experience and she was satisfied he was not an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

There is no allegation of the player being violent to the woman or any expectation that he would be violent, the court heard.

One of the breaches of the intervention order in the current matter related to sending flowers, police allege.

The player sat in the dock with his head bowed for much of the hearing.

The court heard the player was suspended by his club after he was charged in September.

The player's manager told the court the night in custody had been "a massive wake-up call".

He said the player appeared "quite nervous", "probably even depressed" and had not slept when he spoke to him.

He said the player had promised to never contact the woman again.

The player will next appear in court in November.
