Qantas Airways has cut 2,800 jobs in the 12 months since the airline's 2011 annual general meeting (AGM), the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) says.

Qantas Airways has cut 2,800 jobs in the 12 months since the airline's 2011 annual general meeting (AGM), the Transport Workers' Union (TWU) says.

As Qantas shareholders gathered in Canberra for the company's 2012 AGM, Transport Workers Union (TWU) official Klaus Pinkas says the past 12 months have been nothing short of a disaster for the Australian flag carrier.

"This board and this management regime have not treated the workers with respect and you have seen the results of the past year," Mr Pinkas told reporters outside the AGM venue in Canberra on Friday.

"We have concerns where the company is headed.

"Obviously this last year has proven that it is headed in the wrong direction. "By slashing routes, by reducing the amount of services that they provide is not the way ahead of this great airline."

In May, Qantas announced it was closing its heavy maintenance facility at Tullamarine in Victoria, with the loss of 422 jobs.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has said previously the airline would eventually move to just one heavy maintenance facility, with Qantas' Brisbane facility the front-runner ahead of its Avalon site, located just outside Geelong in Victoria.

Qantas and its partner Lufthansa also confirmed in July its joint-venture engine workshop at Tullamarine would close, impacting 164 jobs.
