Shadrack Kemboi wins Soweto Marathon

Shadrack Kemboi of Kenya has wiped 41 seconds off the record for the Soweto Marathon, winning in 2hr 16min 28sec.

Shadrack Kemboi of Kenya won the Soweto Marathon in record time on Sunday, breaking the previous mark by nearly a minute in only his second 42.2km race.

Kemboi crossed in 2 hours, 16 minutes, 28 seconds to follow up on his second place on his marathon debut in Zurich in April.

He pulled away about the 32km mark in the Johannesburg township to win from Motlokoa Nkhabutlane of South Africa in 2:17:11. Lesotho's Mabuthile Lebopo was third in the 20th Soweto Marathon.

Kemboi said: "South Africa must remember my face, I will be back again next year" after bettering Elijah Mutandiro's mark of 2:17:19 from 2003.

Lesotho's Mamorallo Tjoka collected her seventh Soweto women's title and third straight in 2:45:20. Tjoka also won from 2005-2008 and 2010-11.
